DVD to Divx

Ripping, encoding, etc. a DVD and converting it into a divx

IMPORTANT: Please, remember that converting a DVD into a Divx is legal only if you own the original copy of the DVD (and in a few countries maybe not legal at all). If you are unsure about the laws of your country, you had better to seek a legal advice before reading these guide.

This is a DVD-Divx encoding guide very easy (subtitles included). You will have quite good results, while you will have excellent results with the full guide.

You need only 2 applications: DVD Decrypter and AutoGK (and the      Codec if you want your file in divx and not only Xvid).

The process is quite straightforward:

1) Copy your DVD on Hard Drive with DVDDecrypter, selecting Mode->IFO.

When you have completed the copy, try to view a .vob file with WinDVD or PowerDVD, just to check that everything is OK (There should not be pink or green blocks. The movie will be a little squashed, but this is normal.).

2) Run AutoGK

This application is very easy:

In Input Directory choose the directory in your HD where you have copied your DVD, and in Output Directory the directory where you want to save your divx.

In Audio Track and Subtitle Track select the audio track you desire, and -if you want them- the subtitles. You can choose between forced (physically impressed on the video), or not forced, and in this case they will be saved in a separate file (you will be able to activate/deactivate them in your favourite divx player, like Core Media Player, ZoomPlayer, or BSPlayer).

In Predefined Size choose 1 or 2 CDs (if the video is less than 110 minutes you can choose 1 CD, otherwise 2 CDs or more).

Click on Advanced Setting and choose the codec (Xvid or Divx), the audio format and the optional subtitles. You can even avoid to change anything, and let default parameters.

Now click on Add Job and Start.

Done. Now you will have only to wait for a few hours and the divx will be ready (remember: for a 100 minutes encoding you will need about 4 hours with a 2 GHZ cpu, 2 hours with a 4 GHZ cpu, and so on).

Advantages of this easy guide:

  • Nothing to understand

  • No need to think

  • You can add subtitles with no effort

Disadvantages (compared to the full guide)

  • Slightly worse video quality

  • Slightly worse audio quality

  • Crop not perfect

Good encoding to anyone.
