In order to cut and modify divx film (which you can see
using the free players available on this page), there is a
nice
free app: VDM (Virtual Dub Mod).
It is very easy to use, and fairly quick, although some people have a
few difficulties to begin with.
Let's assume that you have a film (generally a divx) that is 1 or more
GB and that you want to cut it in two parts so that you can save it on
two separate CDs. How can you accomplish this? It's very easy indeed:
install VDM and read the instructions.
BEFORE YOU START: Make sure that you can actually see and hear the film
properly before cutting it, otherwise you'll have lots of unnecessary
trouble (if you think that there is a problem with the Codec, as it is
often the case, you have to install the latest version of
K-Lite Pack)
Then you can proceed with the following step by step instructions:
1) Run VDM. Open the file .avi (or .mpg or other video formats) - Menu File -->
Open video file
2) Select: Video --> Direct Stream Copy (if you don't do this you'll
have to wait for ages!!!)
3) Disable: Options --> Display input video and Options --> Display
output video (otherwise all the following
operations will be slowed down)
4) At the bottom there is a little bar that goes from left to right (it
is the timeline of your film). Make sure that is it at the beginning of
the film and then go to: Edit --> Select selection start.
5) Move the little bar to the middle of the video (or wherever you ant
to cut it) and click on a little icon representing a yellow key (you'll
find it at the bottom of the VDM window; there are two of them,
depending on whether you want to cut the previous or following frame).
You to click on this key in order to place the cut on a specific
key-frame so that the operation can run smoothly. If the cut does not
take place on a specific frame it may be impossible to see your video
afterwards.
Now go to: Edit --> Set selection end. If you have done everything
correclty, the part of the film that you
have selected will be highlighted.
6) At this point you can simply click on File --> Save as avi and in a
few minutes you will have saved the first
part.
