Cutting and joining mpeg videos
|
|
|
If you need to cut or join a video in mpeg format 1 or 2, then the
programme you need is TMPGEnc
This is a great application which allows you to change Divx into SVCD,
so that they can be saved as VideoCD and seen on a normal TV
(although the quality of VideoCD, or SuperVCD on most Tvs is not
particularly good).
A second important function of this app, which is the one that is
most relevant to us in this case, is that of easily cutting and/or
joining video in a mpeg 1 or 2 format.
This software is FREE if you save in mpeg 1 format; however, if you wish
to save in mpeg 2, the app is only free for the first 30
days. Given that the largest part of videos are in mpeg 1 and that our
aim is not that of creating SVCD but simply cutting and joining videos
there are no problems and the mpeg 1 format is fine.
Here are the are step-by-step instructions for cutting videos
1) Launch TMPGEnc. Click on Cancel on the window that asks you to choose
your type of VCD.
2) Click on the menu bar File --> Mpeg Tools
3) A new window will be displayed. Click on the last menu to the right
(Merge & Cut).
4) Click on Add and select the mpeg video that you want to cut.
5) Select the video (which should now appear on the window in which you
are currently working),and then click on Edit.
6) click on symbol { to the left in order to select the beginning of the
video.
7) Bring the little arrow pointing downwards (which is the slider
indicating the frame) in the middle of the middle of the timeline or
wherever you would like to cut the video,
and click on the symbol } to the right.
8) If you want to be extra cautios, write down which frame you have
cut (look at the top, where it says Range to...).
9) Click OK.
10) At the bottom, where Output appears, click on Browse and choose a
DIFFERENT name for the new file (e.g. namefile1 etc). Click on Run.
Within a few seconds, the first part will be ready.
11) For the second part, click again on Edit. If you haven't touched
anything, click on the { symbol to the left so that you can start
cutting from where you had left it (i.e. the frame following the one
that you had cut previously). If you have accidentally moved it, go
to the top and insert the value/number that you had wrote down when
you made the first cut).
12) Bring the little arrow to the right, click on the symbol
} to the
right and then click OK.
13) Go to the bottom where the name of file to save appears, and again
save it with a different name e.g. filename2. Click on Run. That's it.
Provided that the original video did not have any errors (or used
inappropriate codec for the audio) you should have succesfully cut your
video in two parts.
If on the other hand you would like to JOIN to bits of a video mpeg,
then it is sufficient to keep clicking Add in this latter window and add
them all up (you can also move them up or down to put them in the right
order). Click on Run and you are finished. Of course this only works if
you are trying to join the SAME video which has been cut into different
parts. It does not work if you try to joing different videos.
