HD Backup e Partition Image |
|
|
Cobian Backup |
| Excellent backup software, which
allows you to configure automatic
backups (time of day, week etc.) of
your chosen files; you can even put
them together in a single
compact/compressed file. There is
also the option of incremental
backup (which allows you to add the
new stuff without each time having
to backup the entire file). It is
free and without any spyware or the
like. The graphic interface is not
great, but you have to be happy with
what you've got.

Partition Saving |
| This program saves, copies and
restores disk elements (whole disk,
Master Boot Record, partitions
table, partitions). This allows
saving hard disk contents to restore
it later in case of a problem and
this without loosing time with
installation and configuration of
all software. Just like Drive Image
or Norton Ghost, but Partition
Saving is freeware. Unlike Drive
Image, Partition Saving does not
work from Windows; but you have to
run it from a floppy. Furthermore,
you can save most of partition
formats (like Fat 32 or NTFS), but
you have to save the partition image
on a FAT 32 partition.
No doubt Drive Image has (many)
more features, but Partition Saving
does his job fine, and is entirely
free.

Handy Backup
(shareware) |
| It practically runs all the same
functions as Cobian, with the added
benefit of a better graphic
interface (much better in fact, to
the point that it is a real pleasure
working with it!) and some more
developed and more accessible
functions. For instance, there is
the option of encryption at 128 bit.
Basically, it is more intuitive and
more reliable. However, you
obviously have to pay for the
difference: Cobian is free, whilst
Handy Backup costs about $30.

Symantec Powerquest Drive Image
(commercial) |
| One of the indispensable
applications. It allows you to
create an image of the C: partition
in one unique file which, if you
wish, can be saved on a CD or DVD.
If one day you make a mess with
Windows, within a few minutes you
can restore your operating system as
it when you took the image.
