AutoGK
Software very easy to use and with acceptable results. There is nothing to understand, AutoGK is quite straightforward, anyway there is a guide on 10ts.com (guide to AutoGK). This program is fast, and you can even add subtitles (forced or in a separate file).

In short fast, easy to use, and with quite good results.

Fairuse (freeware and shareware)

The Light Edition has all the features of the Full Edition except that it doesn't allow for range selection and encodings greater than 700 MB.

Very simple to use, with good results (supports not only avi, but even mkv). If you like, you can encode several title at once, with batch processing.

You can tell FairUse where the end credits start, to encode them with a lower quality, so more space is allocated to the main movie (only XviD encodings). Unlike AutoGK, you have to select manually the crop area: this allows a more precise cropping.
