GIMP |
| Application that is starting to
compete (although still not quite on
the same level) with Photoshop. The
difference is that GIMP is Open
Source and therefore completely
free. It is fast, efficient and full
of options and filters of great
quality. You may feel a bit lost to
begin with but after a bit of
practice you'll appreciate its
worth. Its shortcomings are not to
do with its graphics but mainly with
its compatibility with the operating
system (you may get some error
messages every now and then).
Overall I still think this is a very
good application.

| PowerBatch |
| A good batch free application
for pictures (batch means that you
can modify your pictures all
together: for example you have a
directory with hundreds of pics that
you need to resize, change
saturation or contrast, birghtness,
etc., and save in a different
format: with a batch application,
you can do this in a moment).
Irfanview
and XnView
have some nice batch features
(especially the latter), but
PowerBatch is more powerful, and
with it you can achieve more complex
results. Anyway, PowerBatch is more
difficult to master, so if you need
to do something of very simple, you
had better to use IrfanView or
XnView.
