3D software and ray tracing

Now3D
Now3D is a good ray tracing software, with a useful GUI and many interesting features, like bump mapping, global illumination, fog, photons, reflections/refractions, and more. Cannot compete with commercial applications (like Lightware or 3D Studio Max), but you can obtain neverthless good results.

PovRay
PovRay is an open source software for ray tracing, with stunning features and results. It can match most of commercial 3D software, just look at its main features: radiosity, photons for realistic, reflected and refracted, caustics, atmospheric effects, particle media to model effects like clouds, dust, fire and steam, and much much more.

The quality of rendering is excellent, but... PovRay has not a GUI, but only a textual user interface (you can use a GUI of 3d parties, anymway), and learning it is not very useful.

Terragen
Terragen is a landscape and scenery generator for Windows and the Mac OS. At this stage of its development, Terragen is still free for personal use. It is very easy to use (you can render you first landscape in a few minutes), and has many features like water, cloud layer, terrain modification tool, soft shadows, volumetric lighting and much more.

At this stage it is not possible adding trees and vegetation. The quality of pictures can be very good, as you can see in this page.
