Apps out of 10 Top Magic

In this page there are applications that for many reasons are not in my 10 Top Magic freeware and shareware,  but that are still of great value.

Freeware

Opera 7.50   (web browser)

Opera 6 is smaller and faster than other browsers, yet it is full-featured.

What is its main feature? Opera is faaaaaast! And automatically supports multiple windows!

There is also a version with integrated support for Java. This makes our distribution larger (but still farily smaller than its competitors: have you have ever tried to download an upgrade of Explorer? Or even Netscape?).

You can open it with many windows you like, let them be tiled automatically, set a definibile zoom level for them and much, much more! Too fantastic to explain in a few lines. You can even set it for automatically accept/refuse popups windows (just press F12)!!

The version 7.10 adds many features, and greatly improves compatibility. Simple and easy to use. Great. The 7.23 improves the general speed and fixes many bugs.

Directory Lister  (prints directory)

Directory Lister lets you list files in selected directories on hard disks, cd-roms, floppys etc. into a HTML or TXT file (listing). It's like the DIR command but MUCH more convenient. In this way you can print the content of your CDs (i.e.: CDs with hundreds of mp3s, or of your directories, etc.).

This app is easy to use and quite configurable. There are a few apps of this kind in the shareware market, and with more options, but Directory Lister is clean, straightforward and 100% free.

Popup killer v. 1.45 (stops pop-ups)

Great app to stop the nasty pop ups that sometimes make hard the web surfing. This app has been for many months one of my favourite, but I had to remove it from the 10 Top Magic since it is no more supported (apparently for problems with Explorer 6).

Anyway, Popupkiller still works great with Opera, Netscape and Explorer (5 or earlier), so you can give it a try..

ZoneAlarm

ZoneAlarm protects Internet connected PCs from the most determined hacker, blocking all known methods of attack... and not only attacks, but every kind of unauthorized access to your computer (maybe someone would like to spy you, especially if you surf on strange sites...).

Not so outstanding, since the best firewalls, like Norton Internet Security, Zone Alarm Pro, Black Ice, etc., are shareware or commercial (you must pay to use them), but quite good (since it is free for personal use).

DBPowerAmp 9  (mp3 encoding)

This software lets you encode CD to MP3 in an extremely easy way. DBPower is an extremely easy to use yet powerful CD to MP3 converter (also called CD ripper) and MP3 to WAV decoder for Windows 9X/NT/Me/2000.

If you want to make your own MP3 from audio CD , this is exactly what you are looking for. It can also help you to burn your own customized CD from MP3 files. Good, but for best results you should use a compression of 128 kbps or better.

This software is free, and can be used with no limitations. The quality of mp3s is good, and the version 9 uses the last version of Lame mp3 codec.

Cpu Eat'n'Cool and Rain v. 2.0  (cpu cooler)

Your CPU is idle most of the time when you're using your computer; when word processing, writing emails, browsing the web, the CPU does nothing else than just wait for user input. It produces substantial amounts of heat doing nothing.

This means that everytime the CPU executes a hlt instruction, it will go into "suspend mode" for a short time.
So, while the idle loop is being executed, the CPU will be in suspend mode, use much less power, and stay much cooler.

I have tried few apps of this kind, and Rain 2.0 is the best. It can decreas the temperature of the cpu up to 10°C and is 100% freeware. Only one (heavy) limitation: can be used only on Win98. If you have win Nt/2000/XP, you have to look for CpuIdle in the shareware section...

Anyway, if you have a laptop, or you have oveclocked you pc, or simply you do not like to have a 'ball of fire' in your mid-tower (if you own an Athlon XP 1800+ or better you should know what I mean), and you are running under Windows 98, this should be your most loved application.

CPU Eat 'n' Cool tries to keep the CPU (and the overall system) cooler while the system is busy. Works only with NT 4.0 or higher (like XP). Unlike other software of this kind, it  executes the HLT instructions when the CPU is heavy busy, for example when you are playing a game. The game (or 3D app, etc.) will run slower, but your pc will not turn off. Great if you want to run 3D games during a hot summer with a laptop...

 Note Tab Light  v.4.9 (notepad)

Ever used the Notepad of Windows? Ugly, ugly, ugly. Very few features, bad interface, etc.

So... Note Tab does it all: not only it replaces the Notepad, but you can handle a stack of huge files with ease, format your text to your heart's content, perform system-wide searches and multi-line global replacements, and use a spell-checker and thesaurus. Build document templates, add bookmarks, convert text to HTML on the fly, and take charge of your code with a bunch of handy HTML tools.

The Light version is fully functional and 100% free, while the Pro adds a few features for HTML authors (like the FANTASTIC auto search/replace for volumes or directories).

Shareware

1)  Leapftp v. 2.7.2     (ftp)

Probably the best ftp client o the market. Leapftp is not full of options, stuff, etc. (like Flashfxp, another very good ftp client), but it has an unique feature: it can sneak in almost any ftp server. With other ftp clients (like Cute ftp and WS_ftp, both excellent if you need only to upload your web site) it is often impossible connecting to many ftp servers, but not with Leapftp... if connecting is possibile (the server is not down and you have the right userid/password), than Leapftp will do it.

Commercial

1)   Partition Magic 8.0  (utility)

The best application for Windows on my opinion.

PartitionMagic 8.0 allows you to create, resize and merge partitions on your hard drive without destroying data. PartitionMagic helps organize and protect your data, run multiple operating systems (Win98, XP, WinMe, Lynux...), convert file system types and fix partition table errors.

It is like doubling or trebling your pc.

You can -for example- create a 'test' partition to try and test all the software you download from the Web (a partition you can easily reformat, in case of disaster) and a 'safe' partition where you can use all your 'important' apps (like word, Excel, etc.).
